Oya History Museum

Visitor guide for the Oya History Museum, a decommissioned stone quarry in Tochigi, Japan.

What to know

The Oya History Museum (大谷資料館, Ōya Shiryōkan) is a museum housed inside a vast former stone quarry northwest of central Utsunomiya. These man-made caverns were first excavated during the Edo Period to extract Oya Stone, a soft yet durable volcanic rock found only in this region. Over the centuries, Oya stone has been used in notable structures, including the facade of the former Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.

Evidence of mining is visible throughout the area, with large cuts into hillsides and enormous voids carved into the mountains. The underground mines operated until 1986, resulting in an extensive network of caverns. A building at the entrance houses a small museum detailing the area's history and displaying various mining tools used over the centuries.

From there, visitors can descend into the museum's vast underground halls, covering over 20,000 square meters—more voluminous than Tokyo Dome. A large section of the excavations is open for exploration. Bring a jacket, as the caves maintain a cool average temperature of around 10°C, acting as a natural air conditioner.

Many halls are illuminated with colorful lights and feature art installations, while others have been adapted for special purposes, including a chapel and a stage carved directly from the rock. The surreal mines are frequently used as event spaces for concerts, weddings, art exhibitions, and as filming locations for commercials and music videos. A gallery displays photographs from many of these events.

From JR Utsunomiya Station (West Exit), take bus number 45 bound for Tateiwa (立岩) and get off at Shiryokan Iriguchi bus stop (資料館入口, 30 minutes, 530 yen one way, 1-3 buses/hour). The museum is a five-minute walk from the bus stop. The bus also stops at Tobu Utsunomiya Station along the way (20 minutes, 530 yen one way).

A 1-day combination ticket (大谷観光一日乗車券, Ōya Kankō Ichinichi Jōshaken) covers the bus round trip between Utsunomiya Station and the Oya History Museum, plus admission to the museum and Oya Temple, for a discounted 2000 yen. Tickets are available at the tourist information office, Kanto Bus ticket office outside JR Utsunomiya Station, or at the Utsunomiya Tobu Hotel Grande near Tobu Utsunomiya Station.
