Wakayama Bamboo Farm

Complete visitor guide for the Wakayama Bamboo Farm, a stunning cultivated bamboo forest in Utsunomiya, Japan. Discover walking paths, seasonal activities, and bamboo crafts.

What to know

Located about seven kilometers northwest of central Utsunomiya, the Wakayama Bamboo Farm (若竹の杜若山農場, Wakatake no Mori Wakayama Nōjō) is a vast cultivated forest where bamboo, chestnuts, and blueberries are grown organically. While the farm's primary focus remains agricultural, visitors can explore extensive forest trails, join seasonal activities, and browse a small exhibition of handcrafted bamboo items. A cafe and gift shop are also on site.

The farm's history stretches back around 350 years, when the owner's ancestors first settled and began cultivating the land. After years of experimenting with different crops, the family decided to concentrate on bamboo and chestnut about a century ago, following the then-head of the family's studies in modern agriculture.

As the largest farm of its kind in Japan, it is exceptionally well maintained, with spacious walking paths and no unsightly signs or fences. The atmosphere is enhanced by bamboo sculptures scattered throughout the grounds, from decorative archways to a large, functioning rope swing.

With its natural, uncluttered appearance and diverse bamboo species, the farm strongly evokes the pre-modern Japanese landscape now lost to industrialization. This authenticity has made it a popular location for TV and film productions.

Beyond strolling the grounds, visitors can enjoy activities such as bamboo shoot picking (mid-April to early May), blueberry picking (July to August), drinking matcha from a bamboo cup at a forest tea house, or crafting bamboo items. Each activity costs a few hundred yen on top of the regular admission fee and may not be available every day.

On weekends and national holidays, the forest stays open later and is illuminated after sunset, creating a magical evening atmosphere.
