Ishigaki Island

Travel guide for Ishigaki Island, the main island of the Yaeyama Islands in Okinawa Prefecture.

What to know

Ishigaki Island (石垣島, Ishigakijima) is the main island of the Yaeyama Islands and serves as the region's transportation hub. Ishigaki City, Japan's southernmost city, is the only urban center in the Yaeyamas and hosts the major airport, ferry terminal, and a wide range of hotels, shops, restaurants, and bars.

The island boasts several beautiful beaches with excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities in the surrounding coral reefs. Snorkeling is possible at almost every beach, while numerous dive shops offer tours for all skill levels. A highlight is Manta Scramble near Kabira Bay, where manta rays gather in large numbers.

Ishigaki's rivers, though less wild than those on nearby Iriomote, offer jungle-like scenery and are great for kayaking. The island also features Okinawa Prefecture's highest mountain and various hiking trails through its hilly interior.

Ishigaki has both sandy and rocky beaches covered in small pieces of bleached coral. Visitors can swim (best at high tide), snorkel, dive, or simply sunbathe. The beaches are open year-round but are best from April to November when air temperatures consistently exceed 25°C. Public facilities like showers, restrooms, and rental shops are usually available, though lifeguards are not present and facilities may close outside summer.

Always be cautious of strong currents and poisonous creatures such as Habu jellyfish (a type of box jellyfish), most prevalent from June to October. English signs warn of dangers, and some beaches have netted swimming areas. Jellyfish stings are rare; if stung, pour vinegar over the sting, remove tentacles, and seek medical help.

Despite being the most populous of the Yaeyama Islands, Ishigaki retains abundant nature. Beyond beaches and coral reefs, the interior features palm forests, mangrove-lined rivers, and jungle-covered mountains ideal for hiking and camping.
