Around the Island

Visitor guide for various minor attractions around Yakushima Island.

What to know

Most visitors come to Yakushima for the ancient cedar forests, but the island offers plenty of other activities beyond hiking. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy nature watching, snorkeling, scuba diving, waterfalls, museums, and hot springs (onsen).

A drive around the island's perimeter is one of the best ways to take in the scenery. The mountainous slopes and cliffs along parts of the coast provide stunning views, especially along the western coast where the UNESCO World Heritage Site meets the sea. The roads there are too narrow and winding for buses, making a rental car ideal.

Whether hiking or driving, you'll likely encounter wild Yakushima deer (Yakushika) and monkeys (Yakuzaru). As in all national parks, do not feed or approach the animals.

In June and July, sea turtles come ashore on Yakushima's western beaches to lay their eggs. Special precautions are required to observe them, and guided tours are available.

The island also has several hot springs. Notable are the coastal baths of Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen in the south near Yudomari. These baths are usually underwater except for a few hours before and after low tide.
