Yakusugi Land

Visitor guide for Yakusugiland on Yakushima Island.

What to know

Yakusugi Land (屋久杉ランド) is a nature park featuring numerous yakusugi (Yakushima cedars over 1000 years old) like Buddhasugi, Futagosugi, and Sennensugi, connected by well-maintained trails. It is one of the most accessible spots on Yakushima to view ancient cedars, with many trees just a short walk from the entrance.

The park offers hiking courses for all skill levels, ranging from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours. All courses share the same initial route, with different turnoff points leading back to the trailhead.

The shortest course follows a boardwalk to the yakusugi, while longer hikes venture deeper into the forest on varied terrain. The longest course climbs to the peak of nearby Tachudake. English signs and pamphlets are available at the trailhead.

A 15-minute drive further into the mountains from Yakusugi Land leads to Kigensugi (紀元杉), another giant cedar. This ancient tree sits right beside the road and is the only yakusugi on the island accessible by car.

Yakusugi Land is about a 40-minute drive from Anbo Town. Kigensugi is another 15 minutes down the road. Alternatively, two buses per day run from Anbo Town (安房) to Yakusugi Land (ヤクスギランド, 40 minutes, 1050 yen one way) and continue to Kigensugi (紀元杉, 60 minutes, 1260 yen one way from Anbo).
