Visitor guide for Joeiji Temple in Yamaguchi, famous for its Sesshutei Zen garden.

What to know

Joeiji (常栄寺, Jōeiji) is a Zen temple renowned for its garden, Sesshutei. As the name suggests, the garden was designed by the celebrated monk, painter, and garden artist Sesshu. It is a living embodiment of one of Sesshu's landscape paintings. Completed about 500 years ago, Sesshutei features many upright rocks, a distinctive rock arrangement style from the Muromachi Period (1333–1573).

Visitors can admire Sesshutei from the main hall and explore the temple's spacious tatami rooms. Afterwards, they can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the circular path that winds through the scenic garden. The temple grounds also contain several other beautiful buildings and a couple of raked pebble Zen gardens.

The nearest station to Joeiji Temple is Miyano Station, two stops north of Yamaguchi Station. From Shin-Yamaguchi Station, the train ride takes about 35 minutes and costs 330 yen; from Yamaguchi Station, it's six minutes and 150 yen. Joeiji Temple is a 15-minute walk from Miyano Station.
