Shibu Onsen

Visitor guide for Shibu Onsen, a charming hot spring town with a traditional atmosphere.

What to know

Shibu Onsen (渋温泉) is a historic and charming hot spring town in Yamanouchi that has preserved its traditional atmosphere. Nestled in a small valley, it stretches along a gentle slope beside the Yokoyugawa River, with Yudanaka Onsen below and the Jigokudani Monkey Park above.

Over its long history, many visitors—including priests, samurai, and poets—have come for the healing waters. Some of the ryokan lining Shibu's narrow streets are over 400 years old, adding to the town's character. Guests are encouraged to stroll around in yukata robes and geta sandals.

A highlight is the nine public bath houses. They are locked and, except for one, accessible only to locals and overnight guests, who receive a master key from their ryokan. The baths are small, gender-separated, and simple. Each has a number, a special name, and is said to cure different ailments.

Legend says good fortune comes to those who visit all nine. Special cloths for collecting stamps from each bath house make nice souvenirs. The stamps are found in front of each bath house. While the tour is for overnight guests, the ninth and largest bath, "Oyu," is open to day trippers. Located in the town center, its waters are very hot.

Walking through Shibu, you'll often see people in yukata moving between baths. Occasionally, uninvited guests—monkeys from the nearby forests—descend into town in search of food, though they rarely enter the bath houses, preferring their own at Jigokudani Monkey Park.

One or two buses per hour run from Yudanaka Station to Shibu Onsen (5 minutes, 250 yen one way). Alternatively, a taxi takes about 5 minutes and costs around 1200 yen, or you can walk in about 30 minutes.
