What to know
Hakkeijima Sea Paradise (八景島シーパラダイス) is an amusement park on a small island just off the coast, about 30 minutes by train south of downtown Yokohama. It is one of Japan's most popular amusement parks and features an impressive aquarium.
Entry to the island is free. Visitors can explore the park areas, stroll along the promenades, shop, or dine without paying. Fees apply only for Aqua Resorts attractions and Pleasure Land rides.
Aqua Resorts includes the Aqua Museum, Dolphin Fantasy, and Fureai Lagoon. The Aqua Museum is a large aquarium showcasing walruses, dolphins, sea lions, seals, polar bears, whale sharks, giant turtles, sea otters, and more. Daily marine mammal shows feature animal performances.
Dolphin Fantasy, in a separate building next to the Aqua Museum, has a large arch-shaped pool surrounding a tunnel. Visitors walk through the tunnel and watch dolphins, stingrays, and other fish swim around them. Fureai Lagoon is an interactive aquarium where guests can touch some sea animals. For an extra fee, guided tours (offering closer interaction like feeding) and souvenir photos can be arranged.
Pleasure Land is the amusement ride area with attractions for all ages. Highlights include Blue Fall, a 107-meter free-fall drop; Surf Coaster, a roller coaster with a loop over the sea; and the Merry-go-round, a large carousel that becomes especially charming when lit up in the evening.
Hakkeijima Sea Paradise is located at Hakejima Station on the Kanazawa Seaside Line.
