What to know
Yokohama (横浜) is Japan's second largest city with a population of over three million. It lies less than half an hour south of Tokyo by train and serves as the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture.
At the end of the Edo Period (1603–1868), when Japan was still largely isolated, Yokohama's port was among the first to open to foreign trade in 1859. This transformed the small fishing village into a major city. Today, Yokohama remains popular with expats, boasts one of the world's largest Chinatowns, and preserves former Western residences in the Yamate district.
