Yokohama Chinatown

Visitor guide for Yokohama Chinatown, the largest Chinatown in Japan.

What to know

Yokohama Chinatown (横浜中華街, Yokohama Chūkagai) is Japan's largest Chinatown, located in central Yokohama. Its narrow, colorful streets are packed with Chinese shops and restaurants. The area hosts various events and festivals, including Chinese New Year celebrations around early February.

Yokohama Chinatown grew rapidly after the port of Yokohama became one of the first Japanese ports opened to foreign trade in 1859. It became home to many Chinese traders who settled in the city. Today, the area has more businesses than actual residents.

Four colorful gates mark the entrances to Chinatown, with five more gates inside. At the center stands Kanteibyo, a vividly decorated temple built in 1871 with donations from Chinese residents. It is dedicated to the Chinese god of prosperity and good business.

The main draw of Yokohama Chinatown, however, is the food offered at its many restaurants and food stalls. Favorites include steamed buns (manju), ramen noodles, and a wide variety of other Chinese dishes, many of which have been adapted to Japanese tastes.

The closest stations to Yokohama Chinatown are Motomachi-Chukagai Station on the Minato Mirai Line (8 minutes, 230 yen from Yokohama Station) and Ishikawacho Station on the JR Negishi Line (7 minutes, 200 yen from Yokohama Station).
