Visitor guide for Yudono-san Shrine in Yamagata Prefecture

What to know

Yudono-san (湯殿山) is one of the three sacred mountains of Dewa Sanzan, and its shrine is considered an inner sanctum. So holy is Yudono-san that visitors are forbidden from discussing what happens inside the shrine.

Despite its secrecy and mystery, Yudono-san is relatively easy to reach via a toll road. The shrine sits in a valley below the summit, about a kilometer uphill from the parking lot. A shuttle bus runs between the lot and the shrine entrance. The traditional approach is more demanding, involving a steep descent from the summit of Gas-san along a hiking trail.

From the bus stop, visitors walk a short stone path to the shrine, where they must remove their shoes to begin purification rites barefoot. Rather than reveal more of Yudono-san's secret interior, we encourage travelers to experience this impressive shrine firsthand. Note that photography is strictly prohibited.

Like Gas-san, Yudono-san closes during winter (early November through May), but its road access makes it possible to visit even in poor weather. As the mountain symbolizes rebirth, it is typically the last Dewa Sanzan shrine visited by pilgrims, following Haguro-san (birth) and Gas-san (death).

Shonai Kotsu discontinued the regular bus line to Yudono-san in 2017. A taxi from Tsuruoka Station costs over 10,000 yen one way.

Driving from central Tsuruoka to Yudono-san takes about 45–60 minutes one way. The final three kilometers are a toll road (400–600 yen depending on car size) leading to the parking lot. From there, a shuttle bus (200 yen one way) or a steep 15–20 minute walk takes you to the shrine.
