Dewa Sanzan

Three sacred mountains with shrines

What to know

Dewa Sanzan (出羽三山, "three mountains of Dewa") are three sacred peaks in Yamagata Prefecture, each topped with a shrine. The mountains—Haguro-san, Gas-san, and Yudono-san—are centers of mountain worship. Symbolizing birth (Haguro-san), death (Gas-san), and rebirth (Yudono-san), pilgrims traditionally visit them in that order.

Dewa Sanzan is a hub of Shugendo, a folk religion blending Buddhist and Shinto elements that reveres mountains. Practitioners, known as yamabushi, undertake rigorous endurance feats like long pilgrimages and exposure to the elements to transcend the physical world.

Evidence of Shugendo's most extreme test of devotion lies at Churenji and Dainichibo temples, where two monks self-mummified through strict diet and meditation. Though now banned, these mummies are venerated as Buddhas.

Part of Dewa Sanzan's allure is its remoteness. Heavy snowfall in Yamagata makes mountain travel difficult in winter, when only Haguro-san remains accessible. The best time to visit is July to mid-September, when all three shrines are open.
