What to know
Genkyuen Garden (玄宮園, Genkyūen) is a scenic landscape garden centered around a large pond with a circular walking path. Inspired by a Tang Dynasty palace garden, it was created in 1677 on the grounds of Hikone Castle by the local feudal lord for entertaining guests and family.
Four small islands dot the pond, linked by charming bridges. Behind the garden, Hikone Castle's main keep rises on the hill. A cluster of wooden buildings beside the pond once hosted the lord's guests; today, visitors can enjoy a cup of tea there (500 yen).
Genkyuen Garden lies at the eastern foot of the hill where Hikone Castle's keep stands, just outside the inner moat. It is a 20–30 minute walk from Hikone Station.
