Former castle town north of Nagoya

What to know

Inuyama (犬山), meaning "dog mountain", is a city in Aichi Prefecture, just north of Nagoya. Its main attraction is the small but beautiful Inuyama Castle, one of Japan's oldest surviving wooden castles, which has withstood centuries of war and natural disasters.

The scenic Kiso River flows along the city's northern edge, where traditional cormorant fishing (ukai) takes place from June to mid-October each year. Southeast of the city center lies Meiji Mura, a popular open-air architectural museum showcasing buildings from the Meiji Period (1868–1912).
