What to know
Kobe's Nada (灘) district is Japan's top sake-producing region. Its fame stems from high-quality rice, excellent water, favorable weather, and proximity to Kobe Port and Osaka.
Many sake breweries operate in Nada, which stretches about three kilometers east to west. Some open shops, exhibition rooms, and tasting areas to the public, and a few maintain museums on sake brewing.
The district offers a pleasant half-day walk, blending older buildings with modern breweries. If time is short, visit the Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum: its well-presented exhibits have comprehensive English coverage, and sake tasting is available.
Hanshin Railways, Hankyu Railways, and the JR Tokaido Line run parallel north of Nada, connecting to Kobe and Osaka. Hanshin Line stations are closest to the district and its attractions.
You can start exploring from any station along the line. Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum is a five-minute walk from Sumiyoshi Station on the Hanshin Line (10 minutes, 200 yen from Sannomiya Station). Japan Rail Pass holders may alight at JR Sumiyoshi Station (8 minutes from JR Sannomiya Station), then walk 15-20 minutes to Hakutsuru.
