Mount Shirane

Visitor guide for Mount Shirane, the active volcano just above Kusatsu Town.

What to know

Mount Shirane (白根山, Shiranesan, often called Kusatsu-Shirane to differentiate it from other mountains named Shirane) is a cluster of volcanic peaks just outside Kusatsu Onsen. It's a popular outdoor destination offering hiking in spring and summer, autumn colors in fall, and skiing in winter.

Hiking is possible from mid-April to early November, with varied terrain and great views. Trails start from the town center or the Shirane Resthouse near the summit. The easiest and most popular walk is from the Shirane Resthouse to Yugama Crater Lake, taking less than ten minutes along a paved path. At the top, you'll see the sulfurous, baby-blue Yugama Crater Lake and surrounding mountain ranges.

The road to Mount Shirane is closed in winter from mid-November to late April. Due to potential volcanic activity, the parking lot at the Shirane Resthouse and the trail to the crater remain closed, and buses do not stop there.
