Yubatake (Hot Water Field)

Visitor guide for the Yubatake or Hot Water Field in Kusatsu Onsen.

What to know

The Yubatake (literally "hot water field") is Kusatsu's iconic landmark and one of the town's primary sources of hot spring water. Gushing forth at an impressive 5,000 liters per minute, it ranks among the most productive single hot spring sources in all of Japan.

Bubbling up at over 70°C with a distinct sulfur scent, the water is cooled slightly in wooden conduits before being channeled to nearby ryokan and public baths. Over time, sulfur sediment called yunohana ("hot water flowers") accumulates in the conduits and is periodically harvested and sold as a natural bath salt at local shops.

The area around the Yubatake is bustling with ryokan and souvenir shops, and visitors—many in yukata and geta—enjoy the evening illuminations. A free foot bath (ashiyu) is also available.

The Yubatake sits in the town center, just a five-minute walk from the bus terminal.
