Daitokuji Temple

Visitor guide for Daitokuji, a Zen temple in Kyoto.

What to know

Daitokuji (大徳寺) is a sprawling, walled temple complex in northern Kyoto, serving as the head temple of the Rinzai sect's Daitokuji school of Japanese Zen Buddhism. With nearly two dozen subtemples, it is one of Japan's finest places to explore diverse Zen gardens and immerse yourself in Zen culture and architecture.

Founded in 1319, Daitokuji suffered heavy damage during the Onin War (1467–1477) like much of Kyoto. After reconstruction, it became a hub for the tea ceremony, closely linked to tea master Sen no Rikyu and warlords Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi, both devotees of the way of tea. Oda Nobunaga's grave lies at Sokenin, a subtemple not regularly open to the public.

The main buildings—Sanmon Gate, Butsuden Hall, Hatto Hall, and Hojo Residence—are aligned on the east side following a classic Zen monastery layout. They are usually closed to the public, but visitors can peek into the Butsuden interior.

Surrounding the main buildings are nearly two dozen subtemples, many added by feudal lords from across Japan. Four subtemples are regularly open, while others hold temporary special openings.

The most celebrated subtemple is Daisenin, head of the North School of Daitokuji and open year-round. Founded in 1509, it features the oldest surviving alcove (tokonoma), a key architectural element still found in modern tatami rooms, along with highly prized sliding doors (fusuma).

Daisenin also boasts exquisite rock gardens that wrap around the temple, considered among the finest examples of their kind. One garden mimics a Chinese landscape painting, with vertical stones as towering mountains and islands separated by white sand waterfalls and streams that seem to flow into other gardens before emptying into a vast ocean of white gravel.
