What to know
Ryoanji Temple (龍安寺, Ryōanji) is home to Japan's most celebrated rock garden. Originally a nobleman's villa during the Heian Period, the site was transformed into a Zen temple in 1450. It belongs to the Myoshinji school of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, whose main temple is just a kilometer south.
The history of Ryoanji's famous rock garden is shrouded in mystery. Its construction date is unknown, and several theories exist about its designer. The garden features a rectangular bed of pebbles enclosed by low earthen walls, with 15 rocks arranged in small groups on patches of moss. A fascinating aspect is that from any viewpoint, at least one rock remains hidden from sight.
The garden's meaning is also ambiguous. Some interpret it as a tiger carrying cubs across a pond or islands in a sea, while others see an abstract concept like infinity. Since no official explanation exists, each visitor is free to find their own meaning. For a quieter experience, an early morning visit is recommended when crowds are thinner.
The garden is viewed from the Hojo, the former head priest's residence. In addition to the stone garden, the Hojo displays paintings on sliding doors (fusuma) in its tatami rooms and features smaller gardens at the rear. One garden includes a round stone trough with a square water basin inscribed with a Zen saying, which kanji enthusiasts may appreciate. The Hojo connects to the Kuri, the former temple kitchen, now serving as the main entrance.
Ryoanji's grounds also include a spacious park with a pond below the main buildings. The pond dates back to the villa era and has a small shrine on one of its three islands, accessible via a bridge.
The park offers walking trails and a restaurant specializing in Yudofu (boiled tofu), a Kyoto specialty. Meals are served in attractive tatami rooms overlooking a traditional Japanese garden. Patrons can also order just drinks or share a dish, though an extra charge applies.
