What to know
Uji (宇治) is a small city nestled between Kyoto and Nara, two of Japan's most iconic historical and cultural hubs. Its location near these former capitals spurred Uji's early rise as a cultural center in its own right. During the Heian Period (794–1185), when the Fujiwara clan held sway, landmarks like Byodoin Temple and Ujigami Shrine—Japan's oldest surviving shrine—were built here.
Uji is also celebrated for its premium green tea. Although Kozanji Temple in Kyoto is credited as the birthplace of Japanese tea cultivation, Uji's tea gained renown for its exceptional quality as early as the 1200s.
