What to know
Located at the far western end of Miyajima's town area, the Miyajima Public Aquarium (宮島水族館, Miyajima Suizokukan) was rebuilt, greatly improved, and reopened in August 2011.
The aquarium showcases marine life from the local salt and fresh waters around Miyajima, the Seto Inland Sea, and oceans around the world. One of its more unique exhibits is a replica of an oyster farm, reflecting the many real oyster farms around the island. Oysters are a local specialty of Hiroshima Prefecture.
The aquarium is a ten-minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine or a twenty-minute walk from the ferry pier.
