Miyajima Museum of History and Folklore

Explore the Miyajima Museum of History and Folklore on Miyajima Island near Hiroshima. Housed in a 160-year-old merchant home, it showcases local history, artifacts, and daily life.

What to know

The Miyajima Museum of History and Folklore (Miyajima Rekishi Minzoku Shiryƍkan) offers visitors a glimpse into the island's past, from grand historical events to the everyday lives of its residents. Exhibits include artworks and artifacts related to Itsukushima Shrine and its ceremonies, alongside tools and items used by locals in their daily routines.

The museum building itself is a highlight. Built around 160 years ago, it was originally the home and warehouse of a wealthy soy sauce merchant family. The front section preserves the family's living quarters, which open onto a traditional Japanese garden in the courtyard.

The museum is a short walk from the exit of Itsukushima Shrine, or about 15 minutes on foot from the Miyajima ferry pier.
