What to know
Miyajima (宮島) is a small island less than an hour from Hiroshima city. It is best known for its enormous torii gate, which appears to float on the water at high tide. This view is considered one of Japan's three most scenic sights.
Officially named Itsukushima, the island is commonly called Miyajima, meaning "shrine island" in Japanese. This name reflects its close connection to Itsukushima Shrine, whose main buildings, like the torii gate, are built over the sea.
Miyajima is a romantic destination, best experienced by staying overnight at one of its ryokan. While daytime brings many tourists, evenings are calm and peaceful. Wild deer roam the island, accustomed to people. During the day they mingle with visitors, and at night they sleep along the paths. Unlike in Nara, feeding the deer on Miyajima is prohibited.
