Myoko

Volcano with multiple ski areas along its slopes

What to know

Mount Myoko (Myōkō-san) is an active volcano in western Niigata Prefecture and one of Japan's oldest snow resort areas. With an average of 13–16 meters of snowfall each winter, the Myoko region is a top destination for deep powder skiing and snowboarding, offering varied terrain for all skill levels.

Several independent resorts dot the mountain's slopes. Myoko Akakura is the largest and serves as the main hub for accommodation, dining, bars, and shops. Myoko Suginohara is another highlight, boasting one of Japan's longest runs at 8.5 kilometers. A Singaporean real estate firm also plans to develop a luxury resort town there in the coming years.

Other Myoko resorts include Ikenotaira, with excellent beginner and intermediate runs, and Seki Onsen, a small but beloved haven for powder enthusiasts.

Below the slopes, onsens are Myoko's other claim to fame. From secluded outdoor baths to upscale modern ski hotels, numerous hot springs and traditional ryokan are scattered throughout the area, especially near the base of major resorts. While the town has grown to accommodate winter crowds and increasing numbers of international visitors, mom-and-pop shops, foot baths, and old ryokan still give Myoko a charming rural feel.
