Horyuji Temple

Visitor guide for Horyuji, a temple near Nara with some of the world's oldest wooden structures and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What to know

Founded in 607 by Prince Shotoku, a key figure in early Japanese Buddhism, Horyuji Temple (法隆寺, Hōryūji) is one of Japan's oldest temples and boasts the world's oldest surviving wooden structures. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, its expansive grounds are divided into two main areas: the Western Precinct (Saiin Garan) and the Eastern Precinct (Toin Garan).

The Western Precinct, enclosed by roofed corridors, contains the world's oldest wooden buildings: the central gate (Chumon), the main hall (Kondo), and a five-story pagoda. Built during the Asuka Period (538–710), these structures have survived intact despite numerous renovations over the centuries.

The central gate is flanked by Japan's oldest Kongo Rikishi statues, the muscular guardian deities often seen at temple entrances. Inside the main hall are some of Japan's oldest Buddha statues, rare Asuka Period creations. Nearby, the great lecture hall (Daikodo) displays Heian Period (794–1185) statues that show a shift away from the earlier Indian-influenced style.

A five-minute walk east of the Western Precinct lies the Eastern Precinct, centered on the octagonal Yumedono (Hall of Visions). Dedicated to Prince Shotoku, it houses a life-sized statue of the prince surrounded by Buddha and monk figures.

Between the two precincts, the Gallery of Temple Treasures (built in 1998) exhibits part of Horyuji's vast art collection, including Buddha statues, relics, and paintings. Its entrance is near the back of the complex close to the Eastern Precinct.

Just behind the Eastern Precinct is Chuguji Temple (中宮寺, Chūgūji), a separate temple worth visiting for its main object of worship: a beautifully carved seated Buddha with a gentle smile. Note that a separate ticket is required for entry.
