What to know
Shiogama Shrine (鹽竈神社, Shiogama Jinja; also written as 塩釜神社) is a large Shinto shrine complex in central Shiogama City. Believed to be over 1200 years old, it is historically one of the region's most important shrines and is revered as a protector of fishermen and safe childbirth. The shrine boasts a wealth of history, and fifteen of its buildings, constructed during the Edo Period, have been designated important cultural treasures.
The main approach to the shrine involves climbing over 200 steep stone steps leading to vermillion gates and buildings atop the hill. Fortunately, there are also less strenuous routes for those who prefer them. Various festivals and events are held throughout the year, especially in July, when a horseback archery tournament (yabusame) and a festival celebrating the salt-making industry (the town's namesake, Shiogama meaning "salt furnace") take place.
Shiogama Shrine is the city's best spot for cherry blossom viewing, with over 300 cherry trees planted around its grounds. Over twenty different cherry tree varieties are represented, including the Shiogama Cherry, a late-blooming type unique to the shrine. The blooming season is unusually prolonged due to the many varieties, typically lasting from mid-April to early May, with the Shiogama Cherries usually at their best around late April. During the season, the trees are illuminated in the evenings, and a cherry blossom festival is held on the fourth Sunday of April.
The shrine also maintains a small museum, the Shiogama Shrine Museum, on its grounds, focusing on regional history and displaying documents, swords, and armor from the feudal ages, as well as relics from the city's salt manufacturing and fishing industries.
The entrance to the shrine grounds is about a ten-minute walk from Hon-Shiogama Station or a 15-minute walk from Shiogama Station. It is also served by the Shionavi loop bus (150 yen per ride).
