Chiran Tokko Museum

Visitor guide for the Chiran Tokko Museum, which is dedicated to the kamikaze pilots of World War II.

What to know

The Chiran Tokko Museum (Chiran Tokkō Heiwa Kaikan) preserves documents, letters, and personal belongings of the special attack corps, commonly known in English as kamikaze pilots. It stands on the grounds of a former airbase from which these pilots embarked on their final missions.

Near the end of World War II, the Japanese military resorted to suicide attacks where pilots deliberately crashed their aircraft into enemy warships. These attacks were intended to repel the Allied Forces, much like the "divine winds" (kamikaze) that dispersed Mongol invasion fleets in the 13th century. The official name for these units was Tokko-tai (special attack units).

The museum does not glorify the battles of the Tokko-tai but instead focuses on the personal lives of the pilots. Exhibits include letters to loved ones, final letters written before departure, photographs taken during training breaks, and portraits of every pilot. Additionally, there is extensive technical information about the Tokko-tai, including recovered aircraft and various models.

Next to the Chiran Tokko Museum is the Chiran Museum, which covers local history and culture through town models and historical displays. Visitors with extra time can purchase a combination ticket for just 100 yen more, granting entry to both museums.

The museum is accessible by bus from Kagoshima (80 minutes, 1,180 yen from Kagoshima Chuo Station, every 1–2 hours; also serving other stops in central Kagoshima). The buses also stop at Hirakawa Station (30 minutes to Chiran) along the way. Get off at the final stop, Tokko-kannon-iriguchi (特攻観音入口). The same buses serve the Chiran Samurai District, about two kilometers north.
