What to know
Ibusuki (指宿) is an onsen town renowned for its sand baths, where visitors are buried in naturally heated sand. The town covers the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula, with the main downtown area along the coast facing Kagoshima Bay.
Sand baths are available at many hotels and facilities, but the most popular is Saraku Sand Bath Hall, about one kilometer from Ibusuki Station. Guests are provided with yukata robes and then buried by staff in hot sand heated by natural steam from below. After typically 10–20 minutes, they wash off the sand and soak in regular hot spring baths.
While sand baths are Ibusuki's top attraction, other activities include exploring local history and pottery at Satsuma Denshokan Museum, enjoying outdoor baths at Healthy Land, and visiting Cape Nagasakibana at the southern tip for ocean views and Mount Kaimondake.
