What to know
Naruko Gorge (鳴子峡, Narukokyō) is one of the Tohoku Region's most scenic gorges. Located in northwestern Miyagi Prefecture, about 70 kilometers from Sendai and just outside the small hot spring town of Naruko Onsen, the gorge bursts into vibrant autumn colors every year from late October to early November, making it a top destination for leaf peeping.
The gorge stretches roughly two kilometers east-west. The best area for viewing autumn leaves is around the Narukokyo Resthouse near the western end. From the observation deck next to the resthouse, you can enjoy famous views of the Ofukazawa Bridge.
Along the main road, there are several free parking areas and a large paid lot near the Narukokyo Resthouse. Steep paths lead from the road down to the gorge floor, where the breathtaking Naruko Gorge Walking Trail once ran the full length of the ravine. However, an earthquake in 2008 closed most of the trail; today only short sections at each end are open to tourists from 9:00 to 16:00 (closed in bad weather).
The less dramatic Ofukazawa Walking Trail forms a loop west of the main road, starting near the Ofukazawa Bridge and ending at the Narukokyo Resthouse. This nature trail winds through a forested side valley and remains less crowded during fall. It takes about 45 minutes to complete the loop.
At the eastern end of the gorge stands the Japan Kokeshi Museum, which displays a large collection of kokeshi dolls from various Tohoku prefectures, highlighting regional differences in shape and design. Visitors can watch an artisan make dolls or purchase them at the museum shop. For a small fee, you can also try painting your own doll.
Note: The JR Rikuu-to Line tracks between Naruko Onsen and Shinjo were damaged by severe weather in 2024. Train service is expected to be interrupted until at least 2027. Infrequent substitute buses are running in the meantime.
Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Furukawa, then transfer to a local train on the JR Rikuu-to Line to Naruko Onsen. The entire trip takes about 90 minutes and costs 2500 yen one way with unreserved seats. Alternatively, take a local train on the JR Tohoku Line to Kogota and transfer to the JR Rikuu-to Line there (140 minutes, 1790 yen). Travelers from Tokyo can use the Tohoku Shinkansen directly to Furukawa without stopping at Sendai.
From Naruko Onsen Station, the gorge is a 10-minute taxi ride (around 2000 yen one way). During autumn leaf season (late October to early November), temporary buses run from the station to the gorge (10-15 minutes, 400 yen one way; get off at Nakayamadaira-guchi) and onward to Nakayamadaira Onsen Station. On foot, it takes about 20-30 minutes to reach the eastern end of the gorge near the doll museum from the station, and an additional 30-40 minutes to reach the western end near the resthouse.
