Naruko Gorge

Travel guide for the Naruko Gorge, a famous autumn color spot in the Tohoku Region.

What to know

Naruko Gorge (鳴子峡, Narukokyō) is one of the most scenic gorges in the Tohoku Region. Located in northwestern Miyagi Prefecture, about 70 kilometers from Sendai and just outside the hot spring town of Naruko Onsen, it becomes a top autumn color destination from late October to early November.

The gorge stretches roughly two kilometers from east to west. The best leaf-viewing area is around the Narukokyo Resthouse at the western end. From the observation deck next to the resthouse, you can enjoy famous views of Ofukazawa Bridge.

Along the main road, there are several free parking areas and a large paid lot near the Narukokyo Resthouse. Steep paths lead from the road to the gorge floor, where the scenic Naruko Gorge Walking Trail runs the length of the ravine. However, most of the trail was closed after a 2008 earthquake, and only short sections at each end are open from 9:00 to 16:00 (closed in bad weather).

The less dramatic Ofukazawa Walking Trail loops west of the main road, starting near Ofukazawa Bridge and ending at the Narukokyo Resthouse. This nature trail goes through a forested side valley and is less crowded in fall. It takes about 45 minutes to complete the loop.

At the eastern end of the gorge, the Japan Kokeshi Museum displays a large collection of kokeshi dolls from across Tohoku, highlighting regional differences in shape and design. Visitors can watch artisans make dolls, purchase them at the shop, or try painting their own for a small fee.

Note: The JR Rikuu-to Line between Naruko Onsen and Shinjo was damaged by severe weather in 2024. Train service is expected to remain suspended until at least 2027. Infrequent substitute buses are running in the meantime.
