Fukuroda Falls

One of Japan’s top three waterfalls

What to know

Tucked away in the remote hills of Daigo, a small town in northwestern Ibaraki Prefecture, Fukuroda Falls (袋田の滝, Fukuroda-no-taki) is a stunning 120-meter cascade. It is considered one of Japan's three most beautiful waterfalls, alongside Nachi Falls in Wakayama and Kegon Falls in Tochigi.

While many visitors come in early November to see the falls surrounded by brilliant autumn leaves, each season offers its own charm. In winter, from late December to mid-February during freezing weather, the entire waterfall may freeze over—a rare sight. From November to January, the falls are illuminated with colorful lights and music at night.

The entrance to the falls is at the end of a valley lined with small restaurants and souvenir shops. After buying a ticket, you walk through a 276-meter tunnel to a multi-level observation deck. The lower platform brings you close to the base of the waterfall, while the upper platform, reached by elevator, offers panoramic views of the four tiers from about 50 meters up.

On the way back, you can either retrace your steps or take a secondary tunnel exit that leads to a short suspension bridge. From the bridge, you get a side view of the waterfall near its base.

After crossing the suspension bridge, a steep 20-30 minute hiking trail leads to Namase Waterfall, the hidden fifth tier of the falls system. The trail continues for about 45 minutes one way into the mountains to a small temple dedicated to Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy.

The nearest train station is Fukuroda Station. From Tokyo (Ueno, Tokyo, or Shinagawa stations), take a limited express train to Mito (70 minutes, 2 trains per hour) and transfer to the JR Suigun Line to Fukuroda Station (70 minutes, one train every 1-2 hours). The one-way trip costs 4,770 yen and is fully covered by the Japan Rail Pass, Tokyo Wide Pass, and JR East Pass.

Instead of the limited express, you can take a local train between Tokyo and Mito, adding an hour but reducing the fare to 3,190 yen one way. The Seishun 18 Kippu ticket is a good option for budget travel from Tokyo.

From Fukuroda Station, a bus runs every 1-2 hours to the Takimoto bus stop (7 minutes, 260 yen one way), from where it's a 5-10 minute walk to the tunnel entrance. Taxis are also available from the station (10 minutes, about 1,300 yen one way). Alternatively, it's about a 45-minute walk from the station to the falls.
