Bitchu-Matsuyama Castle

Visitor guide for Matsuyama Castle in Takahashi.

What to know

Matsuyama Castle (松山城, Matsuyamajō), also known as Bitchu-Matsuyama Castle to distinguish it from its namesake in Shikoku, sits atop a steep mountain north of Takahashi's town center. It is Japan's oldest surviving castle and the only mountaintop castle among the twelve original castles that have survived intact since the feudal era. At 430 meters above sea level, it is also the highest.

Originally built in 1240, Matsuyama Castle was designed as a defensive fortress on a steep mountain, making it difficult to attack. Unlike the grand castles of the 16th century, which served as status symbols and administrative centers on accessible hilltops or flatlands, this castle remained a pure stronghold.

Even today, reaching Matsuyama Castle requires effort. Visitors must hike about 20 minutes from the nearest parking lot to the castle keep. The path passes ruined foundations of former structures and winds through multiple defensive rings before arriving at the innermost grounds. Along the way, several viewpoints offer panoramic views of the town below, though the keep itself does not.

Typical of mountaintop castles, the keep is relatively small, with only two stories. Inside, exhibits in Japanese explain the castle's history and preservation efforts, including fascinating photographs from renovations in 1940, 1960, and 2003.

During colder months, especially November and December, the castle is often enveloped in clouds in the early morning. From a nearby mountain accessible by car from a different direction, an observation deck offers a chance to see the castle floating in a sea of clouds if the timing is right.

From the upper parking lot, it is a 20-minute walk to the castle. On most weekdays, cars can reach the upper lot. However, on weekends, national holidays, and busy periods, private cars are limited to the lower parking lot, from which it is a 45-minute walk or a 5-minute shuttle bus ride (500 yen round trip, departures every 15 minutes) to the upper lot.
