Akiyoshidai and Akiyoshido

Karst plateau with large limestone cave

What to know

Mine City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is home to Akiyoshidai (秋吉台), Japan's most concentrated karst plateau, and Akiyoshido (秋芳洞), one of the country's largest and longest limestone caves. Together, they form a designated quasi-national park.

The vast Akiyoshidai Plateau is dotted with limestone pinnacles, creating a landscape rare in Japan. Formed from a coral reef about 300 million years ago, the karst topography resulted from rain gradually dissolving the limestone over millennia.

Visitors can enjoy Akiyoshidai's scenery along the main road winding through the highlands (by car) or via a network of hiking trails. The plateau offers seasonal variety: fresh green in spring and summer, reddish-yellow in autumn, and white snow in winter.

Beneath the southern edge of Akiyoshidai lies Akiyoshido Cave. This massive limestone cave stretches about nine kilometers, with one kilometer open to the public. Well-lit, paved paths and level steps make navigation easy. Highlights include terraced limestone pools, underground waterfalls, and a cobalt-blue stream. An adventure path (additional 300 yen) offers a slippery, challenging route with elevated cave views.

The cave has three entrances: Akiyoshido Entrance (closest to bus terminal and parking), Kurotani Entrance (often used by tour groups), and an elevator entrance. From the elevator, a 5-10 minute walk leads to an observation deck with panoramic views of the plateau, also the start of several nature trails.

A recommended route: enter via Akiyoshido Entrance, walk through the cave, turn back at Kurotani Entrance, exit via elevator, visit the observation deck, then re-enter the cave via elevator (same ticket) and return to Akiyoshido Entrance. Alternatively, buses connect the three entrances, running frequently on weekends and holidays but infrequently on weekdays (none on winter weekdays).

Akiyoshidai is often combined with visits to Yamaguchi (southeast) or Hagi (north). No train lines run nearby; most visitors arrive by bus or car.

JR Bus operates from Yamaguchi Station to Akiyoshido (60 min, 1230 yen, every 2-4 hours). Bocho Bus runs from Shin-Yamaguchi Station to Akiyoshido (45 min, 1170 yen, hourly). The Japan Rail Pass, JR Sanyo Sanin Area Pass, JR Okayama Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass, and JR Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass are valid on JR buses but not on Bocho buses.
