What to know
The Fushimi Sake District (伏見) is a picturesque traditional brewing area along the willow-lined Horikawa River in southern Kyoto. Renowned for its pure, soft water from underground springs, the district hosts nearly 40 sake breweries. Alongside Kobe's Nada District, Fushimi has been a leading sake-producing region for centuries.
Among the local breweries is the industry giant Gekkeikan, founded here in 1637. Many buildings retain their historic charm with wood and white-plaster walls. Several breweries open to the public offer shops for tasting and purchasing sake (including exclusive items), restaurants, and museums.
Fushimi grew during the Azuchi-Momoyama Period at the foot of Fushimi Castle (on Momoyama Hill, which gave the period its name), the retirement palace of ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It thrived as a sake production hub due to its strategic river junction location, abundant good water, and high demand from the castle and town.
Centuries later, in the late Edo Period, Fushimi became a stage for events leading to the Meiji Restoration. Sakamoto Ryoma, a key restoration figure, frequented the local Teradaya Inn, where he once narrowly survived an assassination attempt. The rebuilt inn stands near the breweries and is open for daytime visits and overnight stays.
At Fushimi's peak as a shipping port, flat-bottom wooden boats transported goods along the rivers. Today, sightseeing cruises operate on these same waters, departing from docks near Gekkeikan Brewery and Teradaya Inn. The cruises reach the Uji River junction and last about 40–50 minutes.
The district's sites are within a 5–10 minute walk from Chushojima Station (15 minutes, 280 yen from Kyoto's Sanjo Station) or Fushimi-Momoyama Station (15–20 minutes, 320 yen from Sanjo Station) on the Keihan Main Line, or from Momoyama Goryomae Station (10–15 minutes, 300 yen from Kyoto Station) on the Kintetsu Kyoto Line. Alternatively, they are a 15–20 minute walk from Momoyama Station (12 minutes, 200 yen from Kyoto Station) on the JR Nara Line.
