Zenkoji Temple

Visitor guide for Zenkoji, an important Buddhist temple in Nagano City, which houses what many believe to be the first Buddhist statue ever brought to Japan.

What to know

Nagano's Zenkoji Temple (善光寺, Zenkōji) is one of the most important and popular temples in Japan. Founded in the 7th century, it houses the first Buddhist statue ever brought to Japan when Buddhism was introduced in the 6th century. The original statue remains hidden, while a replica is displayed to the public every six years for a few weeks. The next opportunity to see it will be in 2027.

Zenkoji played a crucial role in Nagano's development: many major Japanese cities grew from castle towns, harbor towns, or temple towns. Nagano evolved from a temple town centered around the highly significant Zenkoji Temple.

Most recently rebuilt in 1707, Zenkoji's main hall is beautifully decorated and contains various Buddhist statues. A fee is required to enter the inner chamber, where visitors can get a closer look at the main altar. Beneath the inner chamber lies an underground passage that visitors walk through in complete darkness, searching for the "key to paradise." This key, attached to a wall along the corridor, is believed to grant salvation to anyone who touches it.

A short walk behind the main hall stands a relatively recently built pagoda that houses the Zenkoji History Museum. The museum displays a collection of intricately carved statues of various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, allowing visitors to appreciate each one's unique characteristics. There is also a display of 100 Rakan, the disciples of Buddha.

South of the main hall is the Sanmon Gate, the temple's main gate dating back to 1750. This designated important cultural property can be entered and houses statues of Monju Bodhisattva and the four heavenly kings (Shitenno). Its second story offers views of the temple approach.

Just outside the Sanmon Gate stand one large and six medium-sized statues of Jizo Bodhisattva. The temple approach leading to this point is lined with shops selling local specialties and souvenirs, as well as small restaurants. At the southern end of the approach is Niomon Gate, the outer gate guarded by a pair of Nio Guardians.
